Holland is so good.

I’m not a villain girl (which I realize might come across as a lie after falling for the Darkling) but this current brand of villain where they aren’t evil just for the sake of giving the main character someone to beat on is stealing my heart.

And what we have here is someone who suffered systemically for their entire lives. Not just because they’re antari, but because their entire orld is rough and dangerous and you either get tough or die.

Many of you probably realized this but Holland is exactly what Kell would have been if he was born in white London. Which is to say he isn’t evil at all, just trying to survive (at first) and then getting trapped into one of the most fucked up situations I’ve ever read about in fantasy.

And still, after all that, he wanted save his own world. Remembers the name of every person he killed. Isn’t trying to (at least 400/700 pages into the last book, I’m not done yet) harm any of the good guys or do anything at all that not taking responsibility for the monster he unleashed.

So yeah. I really like him. I really like how well thought out of a character he is, the way his actions make sense with his backstory and how he really isn’t all that bad of a person after all.

we’re watching godzilla minus one and it’s great but i fundamentally don’t really enjoy kaiju movies because they always turn to defeating the monster in the second half and that’s just not very interesting to me. it’s like when a horror movie turns into an action movie, the whole tone has to pivot from dread to triumph and it just doesn’t work for me. this one does a lot better than most of them—it’s *really* reaching back to the first movie tonally—but it’s missing any of the original movie’s argument that godzilla should NOT be destroyed, and that killing him, and the lengths they have to go to do so, is itself horrific. i want these to be horror movies, and they very seldom are.

like, ideally godzilla isn’t something to be defeated, just endured. trying to kill him should always make things WORSE. but that’s not what these movies are

Having thoughts on memories and the way both Ed and Stede are shown to have issues remembering their pasts correctly…so I read Ed’s not remembering about the talent show as being real like he legit doesn’t recall that because that’s a trauma response and his brain is still couscous

But I read Stede’s not remembering how the duel with Izzy went down or who pulled who to safety with Zheng differently (obviously it’s done for comedic effect BUT…)

I think Stede lives so much in his own head, he’s always living in his imagination where he can make his life an adventure like in his books…like when he writes about Nigel’s death as him pleading for his life making Stede into the protagonist/hero of that story…

I think this stems from the fact that so much of his life has felt like he’s a side character in the lives of those around him (his father, Mary) it’s why he thought he could just come back and be part of that story again…he “doesn’t fit” there anymore (I would argue he never did) because he’s finally found his own story

Anyway he wants so much to have main character energy that he creates or molds his experiences to fit that idealized version of himself and that skews his memories of actual events and he’s done it all his life because he doesn’t realize his life before going to sea was only his backstory…

Tron is the name of the character.

I've seen a lot of opinions as of late how ‘I wanna have the next film be about Tron!'. Which is cool and all, I’d like to see that too. But considering how much of an old curmudgeon Boxleitner has turned out to be. And not even a likeable curmudgeon. It's not likely to happen.

I’d even argue that the '1982 movie wasn't about Tron. It was more about Flynn and corporate espionage than Tron. Yeah, he was in it but he wasn't the main character. I vaguely recall they wanted to title the movie 'Space Paranoids' but someone suggested Tron because it was short and cool sounding so it would stick in people's minds.

… I’m not absolving canon of the fact that it likes to wreck the characters I gravitate towards, but it probably says an awful lot about me that the first fics I wrote for each of the last three fandoms I’ve gotten into (House of the Dragon, Fate: the Winx Saga, and Musketeers further back) all involved character death(s).

(Actually, before Musketeers there was the BSG reboot and Roslin, and let’s just put it this way: I remember posting fic for an exchange and the recipient basically responded with “OMG YAY I was hoping you’d get my prompt that asked for death in it because I love how you write that!” 🤣🤣🤣)

The thing about Cobra Kai that’s so unfortunate is that it’s not a character focused show.

What I mean is, I think the writers approach things from a place of, ‘I would like X to happen, so we will make the characters get there no matter what.’ Rather than from a place of, ‘What would the characters do if X happened?’

And, yeah, some cool stuff happens in Cobra Kai, but so often at the expense of characterization. And in the process of getting to a certain place they leave no time to really explore these cool characters that they’ve made.

So many of these characters have such deep traumas and insights, but the audience never gets to see anything come of them. It’s all just left in the background.

And, possibly even worse, you end up with these 2 dimensional characters like Zara and Kwon who are just doing bad shit for the sake of doing bad shit (and I’m not even gonna touch on the racism aspect-that’s its own post). I’m not saying every antagonist needs a redemption arc, but the things they’re doing should make sense, especially if you’re going to kill one of them off. Like, if they had done ANYTHING to show that had Kwon had a different mentor things could have been different, that would have hit HARD. But instead the only real sadness is because he was a kid and Kreese brought the knife. It doesn’t hit the way it could have because Kwon was more plot device than character. He should have been a parallel to characters like Hawk and Kenny. Like, this is what they could have been had they not had the support they did to get them out of Cobra Kai. This is what happens when you let hatred lead you. Instead, asshole kid got stabbed 🤷‍♀️

And it’s just so unsatisfying to have all of these characters and never get to see the things they’ve been through get unpacked in a meaningful way.

It’s always episodes worth of conflict that they decide to gloss over in one line to get to the next thing. And it’s so underwhelming. You have these great moments of building only to have the world’s most pathetic climax.

Cobra Kai has great characters with interesting backgrounds if they’d ever follow through with the effects of those things.
